The story of Mahadevi Elephant, also known as Madhuri, has stirred emotions across Maharashtra. After a wave of public protests and emotional appeals, Vantara, the renowned animal rescue center in Gujarat, has come forward with a plan that could see Mahadevi Elephant return to her original home in Kolhapur. Vantara has not only expressed its full support for the elephant’s return but has also proposed establishing a satellite rehabilitation center in Kolhapur for her long-term care.

Public Outcry Over Mahadevi Elephant’s Relocation

Madhuri, affectionately called Mahadevi Elephant, was recently relocated from Nandani Math in Kolhapur to the Vantara facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This relocation was carried out following a Bombay High Court order, based on a petition filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). However, this move sparked widespread anger among the local community in Kolhapur, leading to large-scale protests and public rallies demanding her return.

The residents of Kolhapur, along with Jain Math members, expressed deep emotional attachment to Mahadevi Elephant. For decades, she had been a part of their spiritual and cultural life. The sudden relocation of the beloved elephant led to public sentiment turning into a mass movement, urging authorities to reconsider the decision.

Vantara Extends Full Support for Mahadevi Elephant’s Return

Responding to the rising public sentiment, Vantara issued an official statement, expressing its willingness to fully support any legal action that would bring Mahadevi Elephant back to Kolhapur. The statement clearly mentioned that Vantara will cooperate with the Maharashtra government and Jain Math in filing an application before the Hon’ble Supreme Court, requesting a review of the earlier relocation order.

“Vantara will extend full support to any application filed by the Jain Math and the Government of Maharashtra before the Hon’ble Court requesting Madhuri’s return to Kolhapur,” the statement read. The center also assured that, subject to the court’s approval, it would provide complete technical and veterinary assistance to ensure Mahadevi Elephant’s safe and dignified return.

Anant Ambani’s Vision: A Satellite Rehabilitation Center in Kolhapur

Anant Ambani, the visionary behind Vantara, proposed a long-term solution to address the concerns surrounding Mahadevi Elephant’s welfare. He announced plans to develop a satellite rehabilitation center specifically for Mahadevi in Kolhapur. This new facility will be designed in collaboration with Jain Math authorities, the Maharashtra government, and leading animal welfare experts.

The proposed rehabilitation center aims to provide world-class care to Mahadevi Elephant while ensuring she remains in her familiar environment in Kolhapur. Vantara emphasized that the facility would meet all the necessary standards for elephant care, offering both medical treatment and a natural living habitat.

Features of the Proposed Rehabilitation Center

The satellite rehabilitation center for Mahadevi Elephant is planned to include the following features:

  • Hydrotherapy Pond and Swimming Area: Specially designed to offer muscle relaxation and therapeutic exercise.
  • Laser Therapy Rooms and Rehab Spaces: Advanced treatment areas to aid in recovery from chronic ailments.
  • Night Shelter and Large Chain-Free Open Area: A spacious shelter where Mahadevi can rest without being chained.
  • Sand Pit for Natural Behaviour and Play: A designated area for dust bathing, playing, and encouraging natural elephant behaviors.
  • Fully Equipped Veterinary Clinic: A 24/7 medical facility with experienced veterinarians to address any health issues promptly.
  • Soft Rubber Flooring and Sand Mounds: Designed to provide relief from joint pain and prevent foot-related infections like foot rot.

Vantara highlighted that the land for this facility would be selected in consultation with the Jain Math’s leadership and Maharashtra state officials. The team also confirmed its readiness to begin construction immediately once the necessary permissions are secured.
