Himachal Pradesh is set to make history with the upcoming Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park, which will be the first zoo in India to receive certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for its sustainable and eco-friendly infrastructure. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, highlighting the state’s commitment to green development.
IGBC Certification: A Milestone in Sustainable Tourism
According to an official statement, the Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park—located in the Bankhandi region of Dehra assembly constituency in Kangra district—has already registered with IGBC. The certification process includes evaluation of both architectural design and landscape planning. This recognition will serve as a testament to the park’s high environmental standards and its focus on sustainability and ecological balance.
A Model for Green Infrastructure in India
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the IGBC certification reflects the state government’s mission to integrate sustainability into both tourism and infrastructure. He stated that Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park will not just be a key tourist hotspot but also a national example of how conservation and innovation can go hand-in-hand.
Project Scale and Budget
The first phase of the project spans 25 hectares and is being developed with a budget of ₹230 crore, aiming for completion by the third quarter of 2025. The total estimated cost for the entire zoological park is ₹619 crore, which makes it one of the most ambitious eco-tourism projects in the region. Once completed, the park is expected to play a vital role in boosting tourism across Kangra and nearby areas.
Enclosures, Species, and Attractions
The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has approved 34 enclosures under the park’s “Van Vaibhav Path” and “Biodiversity Court.” These enclosures will house 73 different animal species, including:
- Asiatic lions
- Hog deer
- Crocodiles
- Monitor lizards
- Gharials
- A wide variety of birds
Special attractions will include a nocturnal house, where visitors can observe rare and elusive nocturnal feline species, and a wetland aviary, which will feature native bird species in a natural, free-flying habitat.
Boost to Employment and Local Economy
Highlighting the socio-economic benefits, CM Sukhu stated that the park will generate significant employment and self-employment opportunities for local youth, giving a strong push to the regional economy. The project is expected to create a ripple effect in the hospitality and travel sectors, bringing new livelihood avenues for people in Kangra district.
Making Kangra a Premier Tourist Destination
With its blend of natural beauty, sustainable infrastructure, and unique wildlife experiences, Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park is set to position Kangra as one of India’s leading tourist destinations. The initiative is aligned with the Himachal Pradesh government’s broader vision to promote eco-tourism and sustainable development, further strengthening Kangra’s emerging identity as the “Tourism Capital” of the state.
