Bankhandi Zoo Kangra is fast emerging as a major wildlife and tourism destination in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu recently inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects worth nearly ₹100 crore in the Dehra Assembly constituency—marking a significant step toward regional transformation and eco-tourism growth.
Major Projects Inaugurated Worth ₹100 Crore
The Chief Minister dedicated a newly planned Community Health Centre (CHC) in Haripur, to be built at a cost of ₹4.96 crore. He also laid the foundation stone for key infrastructure at Durgesh Aranya Prani Udyaan, including a hospital administration block, diagnostic facilities, food commissary, and quarantine unit—all to be constructed at a cost of ₹47.62 crore.
Among the highlights was the foundation laying of a Lift Water Supply Scheme (LWSS) for the upcoming International Zoo at Bankhandi (Seera Da Bharoh), which comes with a budget of ₹16.25 crore—a crucial utility for ensuring efficient water access in the region.
Road and Infrastructure Upgrades
In addition to wildlife and healthcare infrastructure, road connectivity received significant attention:
- Haripur to Sakari Ghera Road – ₹12.87 crore
- Thathar Tripal to Mehwa Panchayat Road – ₹6.64 crore
- Guler to Nandpur Bariyal Ludret Road – ₹10.29 crore
These roadworks aim to strengthen rural connectivity and support regional trade and mobility.
Bankhandi Zoo Kangra: Himachal’s International Wildlife Hub
CM Sukhu shared details about the ambitious Bankhandi Zoo Kangra project, being built at a massive cost of ₹619 crore. In the first phase alone, ₹150 crore is being allocated for constructing 43 animal enclosures.
Significant progress has already been made:
- 90% of the boundary wall is complete
- Eight check dams have been built for rainwater harvesting
The CM emphasized the importance of building more such dams, aiming to make this project a model of sustainable infrastructure that combines conservation with innovation.
A Home for 78 Animal Species
Bankhandi Zoo Kangra is designed to house 78 species, including:
- Asiatic Lions
- Hog Deer
- Monitor Lizards
- Crocodiles and Gharials
- Aviaries for native bird species, including a special wetland aviary
The zoo is not just a conservation effort, but a comprehensive biodiversity park designed to educate, preserve, and inspire.

On-Site Inspection and Commitment to Timely Completion
During his visit, CM Sukhu also inspected various construction sites within the zoo premises. He issued instructions to ensure the timely completion of all works and recommended design improvements where needed—demonstrating the government’s strong commitment to making Bankhandi Zoo Kangra a landmark project.
